Description

Others have liked this, but maybe I was a little heavy handed with the vanilla. A poor second to the honey blackberry mint mocktail.  This recipe was based on https://www.lafujimama.com/blackberry-vanilla-mocktail/, with its beautiful imagery.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/3 cup fresh blackberries
  • Juice from 1/2 a lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • Soda water

Instructions

  • Muddle the blackberries, lemon juice, vanilla and honey, in the bottom of a glass
  • Pour mixture through a fine mesh strainer, and again through a coffee filter until clear
  • Pour over ice, and fill glass with soda water
  • Garnish with fresh blackberries and mint leaves

It really depends on the ingredients. I think this vanilla extract was quite strong, compared to the standard vanilla essence, and I put a bit too much in, overpowering everything else.

Persevered and made it, but somehow it wasn’t quite there.
Check out the honey blackberry mint mocktail instead.

Description

Watermelon, lime, mint, honey and a dash of tabasco. A perfect slightly spicy accompaniment for a spicy Nandos chicken.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup watermelon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbspn lime juice
  • 1 tbspn honey
  • handful mint leaves
  • dash tabasco

Instructions

  • Mix honey and lime juice until combined.
  • In a blender, blend everything together.
  • Ideally strain at this point – otherwise you get my usual fluffy head.
  • Pour over ice and garnish with watermelon and mint.

This was inspired by the fantastic collection of mocktails at http://www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/drinks/how-to/g785/best-mocktail-recipes/?slide=7

In my first attempt, not knowing what agua frescas actually were (still water and fruit blends), I butchered it by using soda water. This really wasn’t necessary – the flavour was awesome enough to not need a bubbly boost.

The original recipe uses sugar and jalapenos, but I’m currently experimenting with honey mocktails, and didn’t have any jalapenos hanging around.  The dash of tabasco added a hint of spice, that paired fantastically with a spicy nando’s chicken – even though it was only supposed to be a mild one.

This was pretty nice – an excellent drink for a summer evening.

Here are the starting ingredients for making a single drink.

Here is the cup of watermelon, before blending everything together.

It really is best to stir the lime juice and honey together first, before throwing everything into the blender, to make sure everything mixes together well.
And yes you will get a frothy head, that you’d strain if you were working in a bar.

But it tastes nice, and that’s all that matters.
